Reading Bread Labels

Compare flour, whole-grain percentage, fibre, salt, added sugar, portions and allergens without relying on marketing terms.

Reading Bread Labels

Look beyond the name

Words such as 'natural', 'fit' or 'multigrain' do not establish flour proportions. Read the ingredient list and any declared whole-grain percentage.

Compare like with like

Compare fibre, salt and sugar on the same basis, such as per 100 g. Then consider the portion you actually eat. These figures do not promise a health outcome.

Check allergens

Wheat, rye and barley contain gluten. Sesame, milk, egg and nuts may also be present depending on the recipe. Always use the current ingredient list for specific dietary needs.
